The world has ended before.

Scholar Ozin Talaro has spent years chasing fragments left by civilizations that vanished long before his own age began. Three unrelated texts point him toward the same impossible place: the Rootwild, an ancient living forest whose roots preserve memories of every collapse the world has survived.

Most scholars dismissed the evidence. Ozin entered the forest anyway.

Inside the Rootwild, thought-responsive spores reveal truths in shifting colors, enormous roots form forgotten cities, and coordinated creatures called knotlings defend pathways that no longer behave as they should. Ozin survives only because of Lishen Tokai, a cliff-runner searching for a missing scout and tracking changes that suggest the forest is waking.

Their paths lead to Aqqin Tekkan, the last guardian of the destroyed Barkholm biome. Six years earlier, fresh sigils appeared across its regulatory sites shortly before the entire ecosystem collapsed. The same marks have now appeared inside the Rootwild.

Someone is preparing another harvest.

As Ozin, Lishen, and Aqqin move deeper, they join Renne, Verdant Shaper Soleni, relic-seeker Jasiri, engineer Dolos, and the secretive Mira. Together they uncover the Seed-Lens, a relic created by a forgotten civilization that understood the truth: the world’s catastrophes are not isolated disasters. They are recurring failures in a vast planetary network linking its oldest biomes.

That network was designed to be maintained.

For two hundred years, the organization known as the Harvesters has done something very different. Rather than repair the system, its directorate has manipulated ecological failures, sacrificing selected biomes and the people who depend upon them to delay a greater collapse. The Barkholm was not lost by accident.

It was chosen.

Now the network is approaching another tipping point.

The Seed-Lens identifies seven relic nodes and a seven-stage maintenance sequence capable of ending the cyclebut each stage can be completed only during a narrow activation window. The next window opens at the ruins of the Barkholm, where Harvester teams are already moving to seize control.

To complete the second stage, Ozin’s newly assembled company must cross a living wilderness, enter the remains of a murdered ecosystem, and restore a node beneath the feet of the people who destroyed it. Success will not save the world overnight. It will begin a thirteen-year journey across submerged ruins, buried archives, lost biomes, and civilizations that forgot why the relics were built.
