Book summary
The Great Gatsby is set in the United States during the 1920s and follows narrator Nick Carraway as he becomes fascinated by his mysterious, wealthy neighbour Jay Gatsby. Gatsby is famous for his lavish parties, but his real dream is to reunite with his former love, Daisy Buchanan, who is now married to another man. As Nick learns about Gatsbys past and his obsession with wealth and status, the story reveals themes of love, illusion, social class, and the failure of the American Dream. The novel shows how the pursuit of money and idealised dreams can lead to disappointment and tragedy.
