The title poem, The Charge of the Light Brigade (written December 2, 1854; published December 9, 1854), is a stirring narrative ballad that immortalises the heroismand tragic futilityof the cavalry charge at the Battle of Balaclava during the Crimean War. About the Author

Alfred Tennyson was Queen Victorias Poet Laureate (18501892) and the Victorian eras most celebrated English poet . He emerged from humble beginnings in Lincolnshire, trained at Trinity College, Cambridgewhere he won the Chancellor’s Gold Medal in 1828and published his first collection in 1830. Gaining widespread acclaim, he became a titled peer as Baron Tennyson in 1884 and was later interred in Poets Corner, Westminster Abbey .

Tennysons major works range from early ballads (The Lady of Shalott), through profound elegies (In Memoriam A.H.H.), to sweeping Arthurian cycles (Idylls of the King). Though sometimes criticized for sentimentality, his technical skillin metre, imagery, and emotional resonancecemented his status as one of the greatest English-language poets.
