Arthur Wragg exploited the “Alice” legend to create this criticism of wartime Britain’s paper rationing. A socialist and pacifist, Wragg was also an illustrator, and therefore created his own pictures to accompany the text. The work condemns censoring, regulations, quotas, bureaucracy, economists, etc. Interesting, but the reference to Alice smoking a cigarette on page 11 may not satisfy modern taste!
