Gideon Rooke buys distressed hotels and tours them at four in the morning, because four is the only hour a building tells the truth. He keeps every member of staff, which is most of his reputation, and he closed one in Savannah in 2016 and has thought about the woman he did not listen to roughly once a month ever since.

When he buys the Pemberton, he keeps all twenty-two employees. Then he creates a position for Odile with a forty percent raise, an office with a window, and no duties whatsoever. She knows exactly what it is. She refuses it, accepts it for somebody else’s sake, and gives him three months to write down what she actually does, because if he cannot, the job does not exist and neither, in any way that has ever felt safe, does she.

A slow-burn about a woman who made herself impossible to replace so that nobody could ever choose to leave her, and a man who has to learn the difference between giving somebody a room and asking them to stay.
